With H.R. 1, the new House majority is showing that democracy reform is its top priority. Among other important reforms, the bill will include campaign finance legislation aimed at countering the outsized influence of big money in national politics. The legislation would establish a small-donor match public financing system for congressional candidates, incentivizing them to reach out to their constituents rather than deep-pocketed donors. New York City, Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut have already implemented their own public financing systems with great success. Now it’s time to bring this reform to Congress.
