Deep-pocketed donors hold sway over New York politics, and all of us suffer (Op-Ed)

The dominance of special interest money in state politics impacts all New Yorkers, writes State Senator Alessandra Biaggi. From affordable housing to health care, critical decisions that impact every New Yorker are often influenced by large campaign contributions from the industries involved. To fight this growing problem, New York must pass comprehensive campaign finance reform, including a small donor public financing system. Biaggi asks New Yorkers, “which would you choose? The old system where those with the fattest wallets decide who gets elected and what laws get passed? Or a new matching system that allows New York voters to choose our candidates and keep them focused on our pocketbooks and our interests? That seems like an easy choice to me.”
