New York state legislators must rally behind public financing

As the budget deadline nears, support from the Assembly for small donor public financing is wavering, even though the body has long supported the reform.  Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo and many state Senators have been vocal advocates for the reform during this session.   According to the Fair Elections for New York coalition, passing public financing legislation through the budget is “the best chance for New York to once again lead the nation by having a campaign finance system that gives everyday New Yorkers as loud a voice as the wealthiest donors.”  The Governor and legislative leaders, the coalition urges, should reject a budget that does not include small donor public financing.
