The governor and legislative leaders have announced their budget agreement, which includes the allocation of $100 million in state funds for a state public financing system, the details of which will be determined by a commission. This represents a major step forward in the push for small donor public financing in New York state. As Vivian Wang of the New York Times notes, if the commission establishes a $6-to-$1 match system as recommended by the governor in his executive budget, “[t]hat would make New York the first state in the nation to have an active, robust matching program.”
