Better Government for New York (Editorial)

The New York Times editorial board calls on the Public Campaign Financing Commission to create a substantial small donor match program for state elections that incentivizes candidates to participate.  They write, “Done right, this new policy could increase competition and amplify the voices of small donors in elections.”  Several features would be essential to getting this policy “right,” such as designing a system that covers both primary and general elections.  They conclude, “The benefits of public financing are clear: better government, led by politicians who are more independent and more responsive to communities they are meant to serve.”
