Monifa Bandele writes on the urgency of funding the New York State’s new public financing system in this year’s budget. She explains, “Public financing of elections is a matter of racial justice. Black, poor, and working-class New Yorkers cannot truly build political power and combat racism and oppression if big donors — who are overwhelmingly wealthy and white — continue to hold outsized influence.” Leaders in Albany must act now to follow through on small donor matching program promised just months ago.
