State Senator Zellnor Myrie and NY Communities for Change Executive Director Jonathan Westin advocate for a system of small donor public financing as a means of strengthening the rights of the ten million tenants across New York State as the affordable housing crisis grows. Money from the real estate industry floods state campaign war chests and can influence policymaking, to the detriment of ordinary New Yorkers. The authors observe, “[u]nless we get landlord money out of New York politics, we will never be able to strengthen renters’ rights.”
