Columbia Law professor Richard Briffault urges leaders in Albany to seat the public financing commission established in the FY 2020 state budget, emphasizing the fast-approaching December deadline by which the commission must make its recommendations for a statewide public financing system. Briffault explains, “The time for action—for appointing the commission and for guaranteeing it the resources and independence it needs—is now. There is a lot of work to be done and not much time to do it. Further delay, and the failure to set up a body that has a fighting chance to be effective, will break the commitment of the budget bill, which promised real reform.”
